How do we talk about, manage, and understand female physiology in our sport?

What am I looking for?

Female athlete physiology is either used to explain any injury, illness or poor performance, yet in other circumstances female physiology is ignored and not taken into account.

Questions to consider:

  • How would we describe the comfort level amongst female athletes to discuss female specific issues and their impacts on any area of health of performance?

  • To what extent do we use assumed hormonal profiles or menstrual cycles to explain injuries or poor performance?

  • To what extent do staff feel confident and comfortable to appropriately discuss female health with athletes?
